Norfolk landmark Norwich Cathedral has received a facelift in the form of a new outdoor lighting system designed to enhance and illuminate the architecture of the building.

According to the Norwich Evening News, the cathedral's cloister - the largest monastic cloister in England - is home to the new lights, with the system being switched on for the first time last night (November 4th).

As a result of the installation, the cathedral can now host more events in the summer months that stretch out into the evening, while the space is also more pleasantly illuminated in winter months.

Very Reverend Graham Smith, the Dean of Norwich, said the church has been looking at overhauling the lighting system already installed in the cloisters for the past three years, noting the building importance as a link between the Hostry and refectory.

"The lighting makes the cloister even more beautiful," he said. "We can use the cloister at night, particularly in the summer months for events, for example the Shakespeare Festival.

"People love the cloister very much, and like being there. It's very special."

Following the success of the cloisters project, the group that funded the new system - the Friends of Norwich Cathedral society - is looking at expanding its plans and lighting larger sections of the cathedral.

The group is reportedly looking to divide the main building into zones, with each prioritised as an area in need of being lit.

"We will be able to have more events in the evening and generally be able to provide a programme of community events throughout the year," said Jon Holland of the cathedral's marketing team.

You needn't have a cloister in your garden to benefit from outdoor lighting - porch lights can help both illuminate and flatter your garden in winter months as well as help you enjoy it for longer in the summer.
