German carmaker Opel is planning to invest additional EUR130m to expand its newly built Szentgotthárd engine plant in Hungary, bringing the carmaker’s over investment in Hungary to EUR1.4bn.

The investment is aimed at expanding the plant by 1,600m2 and installing about 80 new machines, which would increase the plant's annual production by 100,000 engines.

Opel to Invest Additional Eur130m to Expand Engine Plant in Hungary

Hungary facility has recently started the production of new1.6L, four-cylinder, spark ignition direct injection (SIDI) ECOTEC Turbo engines and the new 1.6L diesel units will follow by the end of February.

Opel Government Relations vice president Joachim Koschnicke said: "Opel is in the midst of a product offensive: 23 new models and 13 new engines will be launched by 2016 and many of these engines will be built in Hungary."

In 2012, the German carmaker has manufactured 293,000 engines at Szentgotthard, up 30% over 2011.
